I have to say this group's post are very informative. Thanks for making it.
What was the inspiration for this? What would you say is Victorian Witchcraft?
You're welcome. :)
The inspiration for it was me being tired of reading posts about "gothic Wicca" and "nocturnal witchcraft" which was just Wicca with a vaguely gothic style overlay. While there's nothing intrinsically *wrong* with either of those, I don't believe that they're the only way to approach the Victorian gothic time period and it's possible applications wot witchcraft.
As for what Victorian witchcraft is...well, that's a bit open to debate. :) My theory goes like this: the Victorian literature and the Gothic period that we're talking about held a lot of power and lasting images that speak to our subconscious. This is when the Draculas and Frankensteins, and werewolves first started to grow in popularity. The culture itself was highly sexually repressive, and yet exeedingly sexually charged/erotic at the same time. Those two things combined provide us, today, with a vast resource of power to tap into and learn from.
I don't think it's going to end up looking much like the basic neo-Wiccan forms of paganism that we see running around today. While it can't entirely escape that influence (particularly since most of the people here have studied or worked with Wicca for a fair bit) I'm hoping that it takes on its own forms and energy as it develops. :)
Yeah. I started darkpaganism
for the same reason, since Wicca tends to poo-poo people like Crowley and other darker parts of witchcraft. Even Wicca in the 50's didn't start out all fluffy and light, borrowing from Crowley and other mysticism (many from the Victorian Age!)
I am glad for this site, because I love to read history and I am glad to know this group is serious about exploring the issues under the icons like Frankenstein, not just because being goth is cool. I get really sick of that. I want to learn and I will read your posts, because they are intelligent! Such a rare thing, these days.
thank you for the compliment. I'm not to sure where most of this will go, but it's bound to at least be an entertaining ride.
